Worthing Birdman 1km & 2km Sea Swim 19/08/12

This will be a another unique opportunity to swim prior to the famous International Birdman Rally in Worthing – the forerunner to the Red Bull Flugtag. In 1971 Birdman ‘aviators’ originally started navigating a 50 yard course from the Pier at Selsey before moving the event to Bognor Regis. The event moved to Worthing in 2008 and can attract over 25,000 spectators on the beach. As in 2010, the swim will be part of the pre-event build up as aviators prepare for their flight at the end of the pier. Live coverage of the aviators will be streamed to a screen on the Lido and the swim was also covered by Sky TV in 2010. The race is planned to start in the morning with the 2km race starting just before the 1km race on a rectangular course to the west of the Pier and Lido. Tides and currents will come into play with swimmers finishing against the prevailing current. 1km swimmers will complete one lap and finish on the beach whilst 2km swimmers will exit the water and circumnavigate a turn point on the beach before completing a second lap.
